Report from USA
NBI obtained the largest single order in the company history by closing an order for 2900 units of SM-500TEB's from Albertson's.
Left to right: Takashi Katayama of Teraoka Singapore, Jack Burton and Ivo Idavoy of NBI at FMI. They represent part of the team which developed "Plug & Weigh" software essential to secure the order from Albertson's. Missing from the picture : Mike Schaefer, Eric Gochko, John Apostolou of NBI, Liaw Fong Chong of Teraoka Singapore and Taka Hattori of Teraoka Tokyo. |
NBI and Teraoka have been successful in securing an order for 2900 SM-500TEB scales. This is the culmination of years of DIGI/NBI effort. The installation was started middle of May and scheduled to be completed end of August. Albertson's is one of the top 5 supermarket chains in the United States.
They operate stores in all major markets, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Florida and Texas to name just a few.
All of the 2900 scales being installed are SM-500TEB with RF Ethernet Interface and with Plug & Play software.
Plug & Weigh software makes possible automatic connection to an Ethernet network just like you do with your PC connection to the Internet. After establishing the network connection the scale will accept as required all data needed for
operation to include PLU data, scale spec's, preset key layout, label format, text and images. DIGI has the advanced networking technology required now.
The scales being installed by NBI/DIGI will all be equipped with RF Ethernet using components compatible with current IEEE standards for both 2 megabit and 11 megabit systems.
Plug & Weigh software is a totally new approach to scale connectivity. Plug & Weigh software Utilizes RF Ethernet interface, DHCP, Dynamic Host Control Protocol and FTP, File Transfer Protocol, to accomplish the complete in-store scale setup process.
Model SM-500TEB |
Plug & Play technology will revolutionize the way retail scales are sold, installed and supported in the future.
This type of innovative technology and support over the years convinced Albertson's to purchase DIGI. Without total support from the staff of Teraoka Singapore, Takashi Katayama, Liaw Fong Chong, the TWS Engineering and Production staff, and Taka Hattori of Teraoka Tokyo, this order would never have been closed successfully.

Report from Sweden
COOP selected DIGI SM-700BS to meet their demands of PC-based self-service scale and wireless network
Antonson Gruppen AB, DIGI distributor in Sweden successfully installed 110 units of the SM-700BS's into 11 COOP hypermarket stores - COOP FORUM, on their second phase of expansion of the selfscanning system. The installation started in late July 2002 and was completed in October 2002.
Antonson was asked to offer a PCbased self-service scale by COOP for their expansion project. Antonson had already proven their ability to supply quality systems in their earlier projects, including the provision of DIGI SM-80 Point & Shop (SM-80 P&S) to five COOP stores as part of COOP's initial study of the selfscanning system. COOP was the first chain in Sweden to install the PSS (portable shopping system) from Symbol technology.
After Antonson presented an early prototype of the SM-700BS and provided some ideas for advanced software functions, COOP decided to choose DIGI SM-700BS for the project. One of the main reasons for the decision is that there is a long-time relationship between Antonson and COOP. Another reason is that Antonton used the knowledge and feedback from previous SM-80 P&S installations to incorporate into the design of SM-700BS software, in addition to COOP's participation in the specification phase.
In particular, COOP wanted to have a wireless LAN connection to the scale that would make it possible to relocate scales without re-installation. COOP's IT security department also specified that all communication between their fixed network and the wireless should go through a VPN connection.
 |
| The SM-700BS operating at COOP. |
With the flexibility of the Linux system and great support of the Teraoka Singapore R& D team, Antonson was able to implement Cisco's VPN-client on the SM-700BS. Security was further enhanced by the addition of an internal firewall inside the SM-700BS to block any unauthorized access to the system from outside. To support scale data management from a single PC on the store network, Antonson further developed their Window PC package to support the image data and pre-set key layout on the SM-700BS.
Antonson is currently discussing with COOP for further installations of the SM-700B.

SM-500EV colored LCD successfully launched
 |
| SM-500EV at Cold Storage Supermarket, its elevated design and colored LCD display enhances communication with customers at sales counter. |
"Cold Storage Supermarket, owned by Dairy Farm International (which also operates Wellcome in Hong Kong & Taiwan, Giant Hypermarket in Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia, and Hero in Indonesia), has been using DIGI for more than a decade.
They have constantly kept their scale hardware and software updated, from the SM-60, SM-25, SM-90 and now with the SM-500 series.
The SM-500EV colored LCD is the first elevated and colored LCD scale which Cold Storage is using. The elevated concept enables them to provide better eyeto-eye contact with customers and thus delivering better customer service. The colored LCD display gives a high tech ambience to the store.
The feedback from the customer has been positive. They like the new image that the scale is projecting and the users are very pleased with the elevated keyboard's "comfortable" position. We are looking for more orders from Cold Storage and also from other retailers who have expressed keen interest in the new, refreshingly colorful colored LCD display for the SM-500 series."

Report from New Zealand
Building a strong relationship with Progressive Enterprises
Wedderburn Scales Ltd. supplied Progressive with 140 units of SM-90NEP's and 60 units of the DP-90's, all of which are networked via 4 wire to Progressive's head office using their Scale Management. Most of this equipment was to replace SM-60A and DP-120 models, with some new installations as well.
Progressive Enterprises Ltd. is the largest retail chain in New Zealand. With its banner stores such as Foodtown, Countdown, 3 Guys, Woolworths, Big Fresh and Price Chopper, Progressive accounts for the lion's share of the New Zealand supermarket industry with an estimated market share of 45%.
DIGI's proven reliability, high quality, future-proof design with Ethernet and RF communications capability, upgradeable memory, and flexible labeling features made it the obvious choice. Another important point for selection is that Wedderburn have a large nationwide network of sales and service branches and are the only weighing scales supplier in New Zealand that service all the equipment they sell and don't use agents.
Wedderburn has a proven reputaion for delivering on its promises and suc-cessfully completed the installation by the end of November 2002 in time to meet the new labeling regulations that came into force in New Zealand in December 2002.
Wedderburn Scales Ltd. is delighted to secure this deal and it will guarantee a continued close working relationship with Progressive for the next few years.

In the A&P chain, over 100 units of AW-3600/DPS-3600's have been installed into their meat departments. This is a result of Bill Taylor's formula of showing A&P's return on investment in every area from tare and labor savings, to construction savings by allowing them a smaller workspace. We were able to show reduced "workman's compensation" costs. On the occasion of more than 1,100 SM-70's installation, we proved our commitment to servicing A&P. We are very proud to be now considered an important resource in their future business planning.

DIGI's high standard of quality, backed up by our superb service has played a major part in building a relationship with them.

We have installed over 300 Automatic Wrappers as well as providing them with SM scales, platform scales, and consumable products.
Product quality, ease of use, and ergonomics all have played a part in the purchasing decision. But ultimately, service and support are the number one reason they choose DIGI.
DIGI Canada Inc. is a customer service company. Service isn't a department, it's an internal attitude. By having everyone at DIGI Canada Inc. driving towards a common goal ... a "Commitment" to satisfying our customers, continually meeting and exceeding their expectations, we can continue to be the most reliable partner in Canadian retail industry.
