 |

DIGI-System A/S in Denmark has had great success at traditional private butcher shops and supermarkets with the new PC based scale - SM 700 series. “The latest success was in the fruit and vegetable department in SuperBest and SuperBrugsen. SuperBest now operates with 210 stores nationwide in Denmark. SuperBrugsen belongs to Danish Coop and operates with 270 stores in Denmark.
“The Danish market uses the selfservice scale function as a standard, different from other European markets where check-out and scanner scales are standard. “During the last few months, we have upgraded fruit and vegetable departments in 10 different supermarkets of SuperBest and SuperBrugsen, with SM-700 series - the new PC based selfservice scales from DIGI, now operating in their 13 stores. Some supermarkets have the new optional DIGI electronic display “e-Label” connected to the PC scale by wireless communication. When shop managers change the price, commodity text and images on the back-office PC or direct on the scales, the e-Label display will be updated by the wireless communication.

| A customer enjoys shopping using the SM-700 Hanging Type with a large product photo on its display. |
“A good benefit for shoppers is that the e-Label will make it easy for them to find the product price, bargain information, production place as well as quality description. The e-Label can also be supplied in three different colors; blue, green and red. The red color is outstanding for bargin price, special offer and others. On the operation base, the e-Label in connection to the scale also offers the shop managers the correct and same price on back office software, POS ECR register, scale and e-Label display. As a result, on the management side, this assures that the calculated gross profit and realized gross profit is the same.
“Some supermarkets have selected the SM-700BS for table counter use and some have chosen the hanging version SM 700H. The PCbased scale is very easy to operate for the shoppers, based on the elegant 12.1" TFT colour touch screen with real product photos, and the operation is clear and easy both for younger and elderly shoppers.”
Klaus Kokholm Pedersen, Director of DIGISystem A/S, proudly says, “The Danish supermarkets evaluate highly the IT based “visual value”of the SM-700 series, which give shoppers the sophisticated and high class image of their shops.”
 |
 |
| e-Label shows shoppers updated information. 30 units of e-Labels connect with two SM-700 Hanging Scales (self-service version) at the shop. |
The SM-700 Elevated Type is also installed at the SuperBest Supermarket.
All scales are connected to DIGI-System’s Windows-based software, LabelFlex. |

Herbert Retail supplies DIGI SM-700 to Marks & Spencer
 |
| Newly installed SM-700EV in operation at a Marks & Spencer store. |
Suffolk based Herbert Retail have delivered and installed the SM-710 modular-type bakery printers to the new Marks & Spencer in-store bakeries and patisserie counters. Marks & Spencer staff can now simply select the relevant product from a full color product image shown on the touchscreen operator display, and print the correct sales label from the attached compact printer.
Marks & Spencer Technical Specialist Martin Joyce said “Our staff are now able to price products from images rather than having to remember PLU numbers or rely on plain text description. This has helped us give better service to our customers and reduced the error rate.
“All product information including images are updated from a single central source using the intelligent ‘Diginet”cen-tral management system, enabling all stores that have the modular printers to be updated in a single session, again eliminating the high possibility of errors where local updates had previously been required”
A new concept featured in the Marks & Spencer stores in Kensington and Newcastle is the ‘Eat Over Deli,”where customers can buy products either to eat in the deli or to take home.
Newly installed, centrally updated SM-700EV modular scales from Herbert Retail provide a color touch screen pre-pack weighing facility in this department, weighing and labeling a range of takeaway products.
Martin Joyce added, “The long standing relationship that Marks & Spencer has with Herbert Retail, who also provide training and field service support to our staff, has made the introduction of these new scales and printers very simple.”

Report from India
Retail market in India set for a revolution
 |
| Prabhu Chandran (front-center), Managing Director of Essae ”Teraoka with his supermarket marketing team, making a commitment to provide Indian retailers withworld class weighing solutions. |
The Indian retail market, which until now has been largely restricted to small stores, is now set for exponential growth in the large format Supermarket/Hypermarket space with the entry of several big players. Essae-Teraoka, a very successful joint venture between Teraoka Seiko Japan and Essae group (founded by S A Chandran), has been the market leader in the industrial and retail market in India for the last two decades and is working hard to capitalize on this growing opportunity despite severe competition from global players.
Some of Essae-Teraoka’s satisfied supermarket customers in India already using the SM-series and other DIGI products are Food World (Dairy Farm group), Spencers, Subiksha, Trinethra, Monday-to-Sunday, Spectrum, SwissPro, METRO, Reliance group and others. These stores have chalked out massive expansion plans. Since 100% foreign investment in retail is still prohibited by law, foreign players might enter the market later through joint ventures with Indian companies.
Recently, Essae-Teraoka has also successfully replaced competitor products with SM-300. These customers were not otherwise happy with the performance/after-sales service of such competitor products. This speaks highly about the quality of DIGI products and Essae-Teraoka’s service support.
 |
| The high quality of DIGI products, including SM-300 series, satisfy Indian retailers, coupled with Essae - Teraoka’s service support through their 62 branch network nationwide. |
Our heartfelt thanks to Akihiko Kuroiwa and his excellent team at Teraoka Singapore for providing us with good technical/commercial support to establish a strong foundation for SM-business in India. DIGI’s superior products/support and Essae-Teraoka’s vast sales/service network of 62 branches will go a long way in providing world class weighing solutions to demanding retailers who need a very high level of IT support and aftersales service.
