DIGI’s Reverse Vending Machines installed at IKEA stores in Scotland in the 'Recycle and Reward' scheme – part of the Zero Waste Scotland programme

On 21st February 2013, DIGI’s Reverse Vending Machines (DRV Series) were installed at IKEA stores in Edinburgh and Glasgow in the 'Recycle and Reward' pilot scheme, which is a part of the Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) programme run by the Scottish Government. The ZWS is a new approach to making the most effective use of all resources in Scotland. Teraoka/DIGI took the machine supplier role while IKEA and Reverse Vending Corporation, our partner, cooperatively promoted this project.

At these IKEA stores, shoppers can easily recycle any glass, plastic (PET) or aluminum drink containers which are purchased in the stores by simply putting them into the DRV machine. Then shoppers are offered the choice of a 10p voucher or a 10p donation to one of the charities presented by the stores.

The Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment Richard Lochhead said, "... thanks to modern technology, we are breathing new life into this traditional approach through the Recycle and Reward scheme."

“It’s vital that we consider fresh approaches to boosting recycling rates and capturing the value of materials which would otherwise be sent straight to landfill. Through this pilot, we want to assess the impact of this approach which has proved successful around the world..." Iain Gulland, Director of ZWS mentioned.
