DIGI Develops “EcoPlus,” a New Soft Bag Dispenser Designed to Simplify Bulk Retailing Operations
DIGI has developed EcoPlus, a soft bag dispenser designed to help reduce operational burdens associated with self-service bulk retailing. By allowing product-filled Soft Bags to be installed directly into a dispenser equipped with an integrated weighing system, EcoPlus streamlines product replenishment and supports more efficient store operations.
Beginning July 24, 2026, DIGI will launch Japan’s first demonstration trial of EcoPlus at TOTOYA, a zero-waste supermarket operated by TOTOYA Co., Ltd. in Kyoto. The trial will evaluate how the system can help reduce workload and operational errors while preserving the sustainability benefits inherent in bulk retailing.
Bulk retailing is attracting increasing attention as a sustainable retail method that enables shoppers to purchase only the quantity they need, helping reduce food waste and packaging materials. At the same time, conventional bulk retailing methods often require product filling during replenishment and dispenser cleaning as part of day-to-day operations.
EcoPlus is a dispenser designed to accommodate pre-filled Soft Bags supplied by food manufacturers. Store personnel simply attach a filled Soft Bag to replenish inventory, helping reduce the workload associated with product filling and dispenser maintenance. For food manufacturers, the system can reduce the need for individual consumer packaging, while consumers can conveniently purchase only the amount they need. EcoPlus provides benefits for retailers, food manufacturers and consumers alike.
Through this demonstration trial, DIGI will evaluate improvements in operational efficiency, reductions in workload and human error, and the value delivered to retailers, manufacturers and consumers, with the aim of supporting broader adoption of sustainable bulk retailing.
EcoPlus incorporates DIGI’s reverse weighing technology. The scale continuously monitors the total quantity of product contained within the dispenser and calculates both weight and price based on the amount dispensed.
Weight and price are displayed in real time while shoppers dispense products, allowing them to adjust quantities while checking the purchase amount. In addition, shoppers can use their own containers without performing a tare operation, making bulk shopping more convenient and intuitive.
Note: As a commercial scale based on a reverse weighing system, the weighing technology used in EcoPlus was the first in the world to obtain type approval under applicable metrology regulations. The system calculates weight and price from the reduction in the total quantity of product on the scale.
