DIGI joins UK Refill Coalition, helping to provide innovative bulk refill solution

Convened in 2020 by GoUnpackaged, The Refill Coalition is Aldi UK, Ocado and the supply chain solutions company, CHEP. The Coalition has partnered with leading global manufacturers Berry, DIGI and Eden Trade Fixtures who have worked together to develop a new bulk refill solution. This initiative is supported by Innovate UK’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging fund.

Due to its exponential impact on the environment, the use of single-use plastic is a worldwide problem. Refills have been one of the most effective solutions in recent years, however, retailers have lacked a viable solution for implementing it for their customers. Refills have been impractical and expensive for retailers as well as time-consuming for shoppers to operate.

At each in-store refill station, DIGI’s solution is to remove shopper’s burden by transmitting a purchased item automatically to a DIGI SM-6000 scale and by simplifying a taring operation of BYO.  Those innovative bulk refill solutions support and promote the bulk sales and zero waste.

The Refill Coalition’s solution is designed to be used by any retailer, helping to increase the global uptake of bulk refills as the new norm for both in-store and online shoppers. For in-store customers, existing bulk dispensers are replaced with reusable vessels at each refill station, which are used to fill the customer’s own container.

DIGI will continue working in partnership with The Refill Coalition to develop more sustainable solutions for retailers, helping to minimise their impact on the environment whilst also supporting their operational efficiency. Through years of working with retail customers, DIGI’s expertise will continue to serve the sector, whilst creating solutions that limit the impact on the environment.
