PC-Based Scales - SM-5300X

Baza Gourmet Foods & Spirits, a growing multi-location grocery business in Massachusetts has been serving a diverse community with a wide range of specialty grocery items. Items that include Eastern European products, dry fruits, nuts, deli meats and house-prepared foods sold by weight. With four store locations and plans to expand DIGI usage to all, Baza needed an efficient, modern scale system that would improve their labeling process, increase productivity, reduce human error and enhance store aesthetics.

Before switching to DIGI, Baza’s staff relied on an outdated manual labeling process that required employees to memorize or consistently look up PLU items. Employees frequently referenced a PLU booklet, leading to slow service and frequent labeling errors and delays at the counter - especially deli. “you need to know all the PLUs by heart, if not, you had to stop, look it up, and hope it was the right one. The previous label system also demanded different label sizes for different scales, limiting flexibility and wasting time as employees shuffled between machines in different departments.

Dumitru Tiron, Manager at Baza, encountered DIGI America at the Associated Grocers of New England Tradeshow. After visiting the booth and seeing the capabilities of the SM-5300X scales - especially the PLU search and Linerless label features - Dumitru was confident he had found the right fit for Baza’s needs. The DIGI America team installed 11 SM-5300X linerless Scales across four locations. These scales revolutionized Baza's operations. Staff can now search for PLUs, apply dynamic labels and serve customers with greater speed and accuracy. The ability to change expiration dates and product details on the fly without needing remote support gives the store added control and efficiency.

The transition was seamless, and employees - many of whom had never used advanced scales before - were fully trained and confident in using the new scales after one day.

Staff now labels products in front of the customers, thanks to no longer relying on pre-programmed labels or switching between scales. With the SM-5300X Linerless scale, there is no need to stock or purchase different label sizes - the scale automatically scales to fit the label length needed for each product. This not only speeds up service but simplifies inventory and reduces label waste & costs.

The results have been overwhelmingly positive. Staff productivity has improved, labeling errors have decreased and shelves look more professional. With only one type of label to order and maintain, the store has also cut down on supply costs.
