e.Sense and SM-6000 SSP Scale
Rewe Mockenhaupt, Buchholz
RetailIn April 2022, the REWE Mockenhaupt store opened in Buchholz (Asbach, Neuwied), built to Green Building standards with a strong sustainability focus. A key feature is the unpackaged goods station, offering about 80 organic items in 60 gravity dispensers and 20 scoop bins, with equipment for using reusable containers.
However, the scale used couldn't store tare weights of customer containers, forcing the use of store-provided paper bags with preset tare values—compromising the station’s waste-reduction goal.
A Clean and Affordable Solution
At the heart of the solution is the SM-6000 self-service scale, featuring an intuitive interface for easy weighing and labeling. DIGI customized the system by integrating the REWE Mockenhaupt logo, importing PLUs with product images, and linking each PLU to an e.Sense sensor. These sensors, installed on the gravity and scoop containers, automatically transmit the product PLU to the scale when a product is accessed. The scale also supports storing tare weights of customer containers.
Easy Usability for Customers
Customer Process:
1. Place the empty container on the scale and select "Empty Container."
2. A label with tare weight and a unique tare number is printed.
3. Fill the container; the sensor detects the product and sends the PLU to the scale.
4. Place the filled container back on the scale and select "Filled Container."
5. Choose the tare number; the product image appears.
6. Confirm to print the label for checkout scanning.
DIGI Technology Brings Lasting Value to REWE’s Zero-Waste Efforts
The optimization of the unpackaged goods station using DIGI technology significantly improved usability and efficiency. The customized solution simplified operation, reduced weighing and labeling errors, and delivered lasting added value. This technical upgrade has enhanced the overall customer experience while supporting the store’s sustainability goals.
Key Points
1. Improved user-friendliness of the scale - Simplified operation to reduce misprints and labeling errors.
2. Promotion of the sustainability concept behind the unpackaged goods station - Greater emphasis on the use of customer-owned containers to minimize packaging waste.
3. Cost-efficient optimization of the existing infrastructure - Enhancements without new acquisitions – existing shelves and containers remain in use.
